The current
edition of DSM does not include any diagnostic categories related to
homosexuality. Although the field of psychology no longer defines homosexuality
as a mental illness, the acceptability of homosexual behavior by the general
public is still quite low.
Historically,
there have been extreme prejudices against homosexuals, but that has not changed
the incidence of homosexuality. Notably, Western culture since the Victorian era
has expressed the most prejudice against homosexuality (Comer, 1995), so
much for enlightenment!
