Where the name Betty's
came from seemed obvious to me, it was in reference to Bettie Page,
of course. But I was wrong. Manager Otis says, "I believe the pinups come from [Elizabeth's] mother who I think collects them and the name comes from [Elizabeth's] grandmother who called her Betty when she was a little girl." But, according to Elizabeth, this too is wrong. "Nope, none of the above!" the owner says. "Betty's theme was created as a backlash to traditional misogynist bar culture of the time, heavy on ads featuring airbrushed women in bathing suits and wet t-shirt contests. Our goal was to attract a clientele of women looking to relax and enjoy quality cocktails in an environment that was comfortable, respectful, and safe. Pin-up art was chosen because it represented healthy women who are both strong and playful. I was driven by feminism and creating a space that women felt comfortable. I was a long time collector of pin-up art so all the art came from my personal collection. |
