Recycling on a personal level

Anyone can throw their chic spring water bottles into a recycling bin and feel better about themselves.  But have you ever asked where do those bottles go when the day is over?  Think about all the energy and money used to recycle those bottles.  Someone has to drive to the location to pick up the bin, and then transport them to the facility for recycling.  What about the equipment used to sort, clean, crush, melt, and eventually recycle the bottle?  And then where does the final recycled plastic go?  How much more energy is used to create a product made out of recycled goods?  How many toxins are put into the air with the process start to finish?  This can all be avoided by purchasing a pitcher with a filter and letting that convenient, chic moment of recycling go.

This dress was made from left over dry cleaning bags from when I worked at a well known corporate warehouse.  Everyday thousands of bags were thrown into the garbage.  I still think of how many outfits, decorations, or props could have been made from all of those bags.  The amount of plastic used for this dress can be fit into a large garbage bag.  That is only a small fraction of the amount of plastic thrown away everyday at that company and many others world wide.
