I first heard of Dan Savage from a friend who thought I might be interested in Dan’s column, Savage Love.  She then informed me of his bout with Rick Santorum, which I found to be completely awesome.  And then, finally, said he was the one who created the It Gets Better Project which I have had a close connection to from the start.   

I concluded in my teen years that the suicide rate for gay children must be much higher than that of straight, or “normal acting.”  Who do they have to turn to when a world hates them?  I knew children that did not have their parents, or were thrown out of their parent’s home. And Dan’s point is that a lot of these children today still do not have their parents and that is why
he created the It Gets Better Project.  What is different today is that children have access to the world through the internet and this was an easy way to reach these kids; to give them some kind of hope for the future that there are others just like them.  What a great idea.
