Darren locked himself and Justin Shave (who he apparently kidnapped) in a studio
somewhere in
England with nothing but a Fairlight Synthesizer he bought off Ebay and a ray of hope. He then began tantalizing his fans with
an occasional video or blog about what madness he was getting into.
“We’ve clearly lost our minds,” he said in a video blog on November 20, 2006.
After showing us a short lesson on how to use it, I still wasn't sure what a
Fairlight did, though, it reminded me of the computers I grew up with.
Only this one had a light pen
and a keyboard. Nine months later when the album was released I
realized the Fairlight is Darren's time machine.
It was used
by musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel * and I’m
guessing most pop artists of the 1980’s. It is responsible for that
digital sound we all loved and when the noises find their way around Darren’s
remarkable voice they make you think of songs you haven’t thought about in
years.
'Bombs Up In My Face'
is reminiscent of Prince's 'You Got the Look' and
'The Future Holds A Lion's Heart'
sends me off humming 'Living In A Box.'
