SKELETONS:  1000 WORDS POSTED/WINTER  2002                                                                                                      ISSUE 4

I read the verses that you wrote
With and without the moon, they shine.
Darkness around all the edges
Shimmers and leaks
From the lower corners of the stanzas.
                                                          t
                                                            e
                                                          a
                                                              r
                                                            s
           In the Graveyard
I saw as you stood,
Still to look around
In all that is quiet.
Your breath at once a revenant
And a reprise of the clouds
That melt in the chattering
Cold of aching lonely nights.

I heard your silent song.
From the first it resonated
Among the stones and evaporated
Into the upper branches of leafless trees:
Informing the night as it dissipated

I would have raised my hand from where I stood.

   Away

      Just at the gate,

                 But

In the blazing yellow halo of the street light,
                                  You could not see me.
