How did you finally transition out of your day-job to this full time dream? When we bought the company, we intended to run it part-time. However, very quickly I realized that I couldn’t continue to lose weeks, months, and years working for someone else and not trying to reach my full potential with our company. To me, this was more of a mental and financial adjustment. Owning a business isn’t easier, better-paying, or better-scheduled. I grew up with a family business, I already appreciated the concept of “working when work needs done” and that “the business owns you, you don’t own the business”. My husband earns a decent salary, so the financial adjustments were easier to make (not easy, just easier). Without him, I would not have just reinvented my career overnight. Losing my guaranteed income (well guaranteed unless you get laid off, fired, outsourced, or some other unforeseeable situation) has also been tough. We really changed our lifestyle to accommodate the business. You can’t price flexibility, accountability, and satisfaction from a hard day’s work. To me, these things are worth the loss of income from leaving my previous career. Did you have to get a business loan or did you save up in advance to start the company? No, we did not get a business loan. While we didn’t have tons of money, we did make personal adjustments to our finances so that we could afford to start the company. |
